Cal Character Change
Cal had always been the mother figure to Jem and Scout. She had always been stern and punished them if she felt it necessary. The event that had changed her was when both Scout and Jem when to school on the first day. Before, it was only Jem who went to school and Cal had to look after Scout all day.Cal had not realized how lonely she would be or how much she would miss them. Later after the first day of school, Cal is especially kind to Scout by making her crackling bread (Scout's favorite). When a negro woman named Lula told Cal that she could not bring Jem and Scout to the negro church she stands up for them even though Cal didn't know how the other Negros would act to her bringing Scout and Jem. The theme that relates to this event is moral courage because Cal is not suppose to care as much for Scout and Jem as much as she does because she works for the family and people, like Aunt Alexandra, do not agree to her being around the children so much.
