Aunt Alexandra Character Change
Aunt Alexandra had always thought of the Negro population as people to serve them. She would often try to get Atticus to get rid of Calpurnia, but he would refuse. Before Tom's trial she had never really thought of Negros as people to care about. But when she sees Atticus standing up for Tom, a black man, she stands by him even when the townspeople disagreed. After the trial, Tom tries to escapes from jail and is killed and this affects Aunt Alexandra. She is very upset and concerned and even agrees to Atticus and Cal going to break the news to Helen, Tom's wife. The theme that would relate to this event is racial prejudice because before she had never really had concern for the Negros and thought of them as workers and not important.
